Every night, more than 105,000 Australians don’t have a place to call home. That’s one in every 200 people.

More than 1700 Canberrans are homeless on any given night. Whether they are sleeping rough, staying temporarily with friends or sleeping in unsafe overcrowded dwellings. They are without a home.

The Northside team are proud to be the lead agency in the ACT championing the Housing First approach to contribute to ending Homelessness in the ACT.

Housing First recognises that stability is more likely to be achieved if an individual or family has and affordable, safe, permanent place to live.  This approach harnesses the power of permanent, safe housing to help people recover and heal from the trauma of homelessness. It gives them a safe space in which to address the issues that may be stopping them from living the lives they want.

Northside is also a proud member and state representative to peak body Homelessness Australia. Homelessness Australia is also the coordinating organization of National Homelessness Week.

Homelessness Week is a national event held in the first week of August each year and calls on Australians to raise awareness of people experiencing homelessness and the issues these people face. In 2017, Homelessness Week will take place on 7th-13th August.  The theme of this year’s Homelessness Week is ‘Action and Innovation‘ in which we highlight the many effective approaches specialist homelessness services continue to implement to respond to homelessness.
