Northside Community Service would like to congratulate Yvette Berry on her new appointments in the ACT Government as Deputy Chief Minister and Minister for Education and Early Childhood Development.

Northside has had a strong relationship with Deputy Chief Minister Berry through her long advocacy for the Canberra community, and during the last term of Government when she was the Minister for Community Services – working in partnership with Northside on a range of community programs.

We particularly welcome Deputy Chief Minister Berry’s new ministerial responsibilities, which include an acknowledgement of the importance and value of early childhood education for the learning and wellbeing of young children, and the future prosperity of the Canberra region.

With this appointment, the ACT Government has the opportunity to be the first in Australia to develop a comprehensive early childhood strategy that recognises the importance of investment in educational and social outcomes in the first five years. We commend ACT Labor for their commitment during the recent election campaign to develop such a strategy, and are ready to support the development and implementation of this commitment.

We look forward to working closely with Deputy Chief Minister Berry in her new role to support positive outcomes for children and families.
